Who makes it, and what to know
Who makes it: Ascaso, in its own workshop in Barcelona, Spain, where it has built espresso machines since the 1960s. The body is aluminum, polished and then varnished, which is why the colors run deep. PID temperature control adjustable by the degree, a 58 mm professional portafilter with a walnut handle, an adjustable over-pressure valve, volumetric programming (pre-infusion, single, double, auto standby) and a no-burn steam wand. The thermoblock is stainless-lined and warms up in about three and a half minutes. 1100 watts on 120 volts. 10 in. wide, 13.5 in. deep, 13.5 in. tall, with 3 in. of cup clearance and a 43 oz reservoir. Takes ESE pods without an adaptor. Five baskets, a tamper and a blind basket are in the box. Aluminum costs $100 more than the painted finishes. Warranty: 12 months from Ascaso, plus 5 years on the thermoblock and group. Ascaso's US service center handles support. Home use only.
